MRI result question ( experts on knee please answer)?

when i got my preliminary results back, the MRI revealed i have water or fluid on my knee. this however often occurs with a meniscus tear, which is what my orthopedic surgeon initially thought i had. could the prelims be wrong? it doesn't make sense to have something caused by a meniscus tear and not have a torn meniscus.
