How can we help fix the national debt?

We're over a dozen trillion dollars in the hole, and I'm tired of our country being so far in debt. Is there anything that citizens can do on their own, or do we have to depend on our government? I just feel so powerless. Other than buy American-made goods, send letters to representatives, and maintain a budget I don't know what I can do. There's got to be something.
