Help with sociology research design?

I'm doing a research design on the relationship between binge drinking and academic performance among college students. I need a little help... I can't think of good operational definitions for both binge drinking and academic performance. Also what would the ethical considerations be, even if the research is just a study? Any input helps and is much appreciated! Thank you! =D
